A furnace is a means to combust fuel at a very high temperature, usually there is a forced air supply and refractory matter (heat reflective surfaces or refractory bricks) around the combustion zone. Because there are high temperatures for the combustion of the fuel combined with a more than adequate supply of oxygen the process can be very efficient indeed. The fuel can be gas, oil, wood, rubbish or just about anything that will burn. If irregular fuels are being used it may be more difficult to automate the furnace but there are many different designs to suit most applications.
