Furnace1

My first attempt at a furnace

This was my first very crude experimental furnace. Basically just an oil-drum full of fuel and a fan (heater fan from a Toyota car). The first part of the flue was a 10 foot long water-jacket heat-exchanger that I made myself. When I tested it I thought it was a failure because the water didn't heat up very quickly. Since then I have realised my mistake because I had expected the water to become hot much quicker than it actually does. After a few calculations it was obvious that the furnace was doing a fairly good job. It was fuelled by a mixture of rubbish and wood but I soon got bored of continually stoking it. Although it wasn't very practical it did teach me a lot and gave me ideas for the next design.
