Methane enlarged

What is methane?

Methane is a simple combustible hydrocarbon gas with chemical formula CH4. Sometimes called marsh-gas because it will form naturally from rotting vegetation under marshy ground and bogs. It's given off by the process of digestion in an animal's gut and rises through the ground from landfill refuge sites and similar. Generally it will naturally form in situations where there is decomposition in the absence of oxygen (anaerobic). The good news is that it's easy to make and highly flammable! It stinks like rotten cabbage if not ignited but, with a burner correctly designed there should be few problems
